KKR Buys Gambhir At Whopping Rs 11.04 Crore, No Buyer For Ganguly

Bangalore, Jan 8 (PTI) Indian opener Gautam Gambhir was bought by Shah Rukha Khan co-owned Kolkata Knight Riders for a whopping USD 2.4 million (approx Rs 11.04 crore) for the fourth edition of Indian Premier League to be held from April 8 to May 20.

The KKR dominated the first round of auction of nine marquee players as they also bought T20 specialist Yusuf Pathan for a staggering USD 2.1 million (approx Rs 9.66 crore).The first round of auctions certainly belonged to KKR although they have consumed half of their spending purse (USD 4.5 million) on two players.

It was intense bidding for Gambhir who was the first player under the hammer as Saha Pune Warriors and Mumbai Indians were involved in a bidding war before KKR joined the fray after it crossed the million dollar barrier.

Sahara Pune Warriors opened their account with Yuvraj Singh buying him for USD 1.8 million (Rs 8.28 crore apprx) after beating Team Kochi and Kings XI Punjab in the bid.Kings XI Punjab also lost the bid of Sri Lankan Mahela Jayawardene who was bought by Kochi for USD 1.5 million.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore bought Zaheer Khan for USD 900,000 and dashing Lankan opener TM Dilshan for USD 650,000. However the VIjay Mallya owned franchise had a prize catch in talented South African AB de Villiers buying him for a big amount of USD 1.1 million (Rs 5.06 crore).

The Rajasthan Royals bought New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor for USD 1 million (Rs 4.6 crore).

However, for Kevin Pietersen who was one of the most sought after players in the second and third edition was bought by Deccan Chargers for USD 650,000 much less than his million dollar price in the earlier years.Petersen, alongwith Andrew Flintoff, was the most expensive player in the last edition with USD 1.5 million. 'Fine or ban Randiv for misconduct'

While the world debates whether Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara had a role to play in his bowler Suraj Randiv bowling a no-ball to deny Virender Sehwag a century, cricket great Sunil Gavaskar has told that either the Sri Lankan team should be fined or Randiv should be banned for his misconduct. Randiv's no-ball delivery had left Virender Sehwag stranded at 99 not out in Dambulla on Monday. Reactions have been pouring in since yesterday. While now-retired spin maestro Murlidharan insists that Sangakkara is too fair a captain to indulge in something like this, Virender Sehwag says it has happened before. Sunil Gavaskar is very clear that, " An apology is fine but if the Sri Lankan Cricket Board want to uphold the spirit of the game, they should take some action against him, may be penalise him by dropping him for the next game or taking away is match fee.. something that sends a signal that cricket is after all a sport." Harris Included In 12-Man Australia Squad For 2nd Test

Melbourne, Dec 30: Swing bowler Ryan Harris was today included in Australia’s 12-man squad for the second cricket Test against India starting on January 3 in Sydney, while the eleven who played in the opening match here retained their places. Pacer Mitchell Starc and all-rounder Daniel Christian were left out from the 13-man squad for the opening Test which Australia won by 122 runs at the MCG. The 32-year-old Harris from New South Wales has picked up 35 wickets from eight Tests at 21.37 average before a hip injury during the Cape Town Test against South Africa last month put him on a rehabilitation programme. “Harris has been included in the eleven that played the first Test in Melbourne. Ryan has had carefully monitored preparation, which has gone to plan,” said national selector John Inverarity.
